Starting at the western end of the white cliffs area (the Folkstone end), sites that I would recommend and would plan to share with you while visiting are;
- The chalk, white horse on the hill, overlooking the channel tunnel site and incredible vista of the South East Coast across New Romney Marsh as far as Dungeness (included).
- Caesar's Camp. The old Roman fortification on the hill (included).
- The Spitfire Museum at Hawkinge (Private and at an additional charge payable on the day).
- Vantage point in Capel-le-Ferne (included).
- The Battle of Britain memorial in Capel-le-Ferne (free section included but there is also a additional interactive experience at a small additional charge).
- Cliff top walk from Capel-le-Fern down hill to Samphire Hoe (approximately 3 miles with both smooth or grassy terrain or as much as is desirable (Included). This walk along the North Downs Way gives unrivalled opportunity to explore WW2 military fortifications and cliff top gun emplacements. Exciting terrain (if you choose) or a smooth footpath are available both offering fantastic views up and down the coast line including Dover port itself. It's not the busy 'tourist' White Cliffs walk. We often see Spitfires while on this walk. This walk can be completed up-hill, Dover to Caple or downhill, Caple to Dover).
- Abbot's Cliff Sound Mirror (included).
- Samphire Hoe (nature reserve near the port where the spoil from the channel tunnel was relocated to. This is accessed via the Samphire tunnel, an exhilarating experience (Included). Samphire Hoe would be recommended if completing the clifftop walk from Capel to Dover. I'd tend not to recommend starting the walk at Samphire Hoe. The hill to leave and start the walk, is rather steep.
- Western Heights, (St Martins Battery), WW2 Gun emplacements overlooking Dover port. (Included). These are well preserved and accessible.
- The Grand Shaft. The Western Heights. (Napoleonic triple helix stair case. Open the 3rd Sunday of every month. (Free).
- The Western Heights, Napoleonic Fortifications. English Heritage. Can be accessed to view from the outside but this is a challenging. Some organized tours do take place infrequently. Google for details. (Not included).
- The Knights Templar Church.
- Archcliffe Fort. An ancient coastal fortification developed over the ages.
- Dover sea-front including the pier, the new marina and 'the curve', with eateries and live music (Included).
- Dover Museum and Bronze age Boat Gallery (Included).
- The 'Mist Hoops' in the Market Square.
- Dover Town Hall (included).
- The Roman Painted House. (Private. A small fee to enter).
- St Edmunds Chapel.
- Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens. (Included)
- Crabble Corn Mill. Working Water Wheel Mill.
- Bleriot's Monument (Landing site for the first powered, manned flight across the channel. Included)
- Fort Burgoyne 1859. (Not included. Open infrequently. Review Google for details).
- St James' Church ruins.
- Dover Castle. (English Heritage Site, additional cost. Yearly membership or an overseas visitors pass (9 or 16 days) will enable entry to all three castles. These can be purchased at any of the sites or on line prior to your visit.
- Dover Castle, war time tunnels (Included in the entrance to Dover Castle).
- Langdon Cliffs (National Trust sight although included for my customers).
- Clifftop Walk on Langdon cliffs towards the South Foreland's Lighthouse towards the famous St Margret's Bay and even as far as Kingsdown. This clifftop walk can also be offered in reverse, concluding at the Langdon cliffs visitor centre.
- Fan Bay Deep shelter (National Trust, additional cost and booking required).
- Fan Bay Sound Mirror.
- St Margret's Bay where Noel Cowards/Ian Fleming's historic homes can be observed.
- Walmer Castle (English Heritage site).
- Deal Castle (English Heritage site).
- Deal town, Deal pier and sea front (Included and free).
- Ham Sandwich road sign (Included).
- Full size Viking long ship (Pegwell Bay. Included).
- The Hurricane and Spitfire Museum (Included) with Spitfire flight simulation (with addition cost and booking requirements).
- The Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre (English Heritage Site Re-opening April 2023 following renovations).
Spitfires can be seen flying most of the year and often, several flights a day take place (although not from the area), so if we are outside, we are likely (although not guaranteed) to see and hear, these historic planes turning and barrel rolling across the sky. There is nothing quite like being up high on the cliffs as a location to see and hear these amazing planes.
The areas available to us are of outstanding natural beauty and also boast an extensive and diverse range of animal/bird life as well as flora and fauna. My recommendation would always be to include a cliff top walk as one element of your tour. To not do so would be a missed opportunity. I offer, exclusive, 'one way walking' so that you can cover the most ground possible and make the most of the walking that you do.
