This tour takes in the quintessential areas that, if you’re only coming to Dover once, you just can’t miss. Timings are flexible and you can choose to spend more or less time at any one place, depending on your preference.
The order of your visits may vary depending on our start time which can be offered to meet your needs. Dover Castle opens at 10am so a tour with an early start would typically start at St Margret’s Bay and would then work back from there.
Samphire Hoe and the Battle of Britain Memorial are available depending on time and choices that you make through the day. I’d always choose to get you to these two places too.
The three key areas are guaranteed to be included.
Important Notice.
Dover Castle is only open at weekends from 1st November 2024 until Sat 15th Feb 2025.
Visit and spend as long as you wish at the largest and most magnificent Castle in England which sits on high, watching over Dover.
Experience and learn about the castle’s long history, from iron and bronze age hill fort to Roman Lighthouse, it’s military fortification and history in relation to the rest of Dover. Explore all of the grounds and inside the Great Tower. Don't miss the incredible views from the top.
Walk the ramparts and investigate the medieval tunnels to really get a feel for the incredible history of our breath-taking and unmissable castle.
The Castle’s importance in World War 2 is often not appreciated. The castle’s position and network of tunnels deep in the chalk cliffs were used as the base to co-ordinate both the Dunkirk evacuations (operation Dynamo) and the Allied forces, D-day landings.
At least 3 hours is needed.
Spend as long as you wish hiking, strolling or just sitting and drinking in the spectacular views and vistas, on this historic, world famous landmark, which may soon become a UNESCO World Heritage site. I won't hurry you. A longer point-to-point walk is available if you choose. I will guide you and share my knowledge of the area to make sure you make the most of where you are and what you are seeing.
There are many fantastic places to eat that are available locally and with notice, I can make appropriate reservations. The White Cliffs Country Website contains lots of helpful information about local places to eat or we can just decide on the day.
This stunningly beautiful little bay, not accessible by larger tours, has a lovely pub and beach and is home to the houses owned and lived in by both Noel Coward and then Ian Fleming.
This, cliff top visitors centre and official national monument, is free to enter (although donations are encouraged) and is one of many places that prompt pause for reflection. Visits and reflection can be poignantly punctuated by the sight and sound of Spitfires regularly flying overheard.
If time permits, is a must see on this tour and I look to try to include this whenever can.
This nature reserve was initially a mining area and then adapted to provide a platform for railway connections along the coast. Most recently it has been developed in to the beautiful nature reserve that it is today. 5 million cubic metres of spoil, dug out from the Channel Tunnel project. Is located at the foot of some of the highest sections of the white cliffs of Dover. Accessed by actually driving (or walking) down a tunnel through the cliffs, a visit here is awe inspiring and the scenery dramatic.

Collection can be from a location of your choosing. The tour can conclude at a point of your choosing too providing it is no further than the point from which you were collected at the start of the day although this can be offered for an additional charge.
Perhaps you would choose to finish your day at one of the stops and make the most of your time outside of the tour arrangements. This is fine too.
Please note that during the winter months (November 1st, until February 14th), Dover castle is only open at weekends and holiday periods. An alternative historical venue can be visited if booking a midweek tour. In it's place. Dover Museum (not Sundays) and Samphire Hoe might be chosen.
